Nick Granville Quartet. Featuring Kelly Moneymaker
Nick Granville presents a night of music featuring a stella lineup of Lance Philip (drums), Nick Tipping (bass), Bryn Van Vliet (saxes) and guest vocalist Kelly Moneymaker. The music will be a mix of standards, blues and latin tunes with a few modern classic thrown in for good measure; all with the express goal of taking the audience on a musical journey. Expect acoustic duets, full band instrumentals, and special vocal feature tunes showcasing the vocal abilities of Kelly Moneymaker. The repertoire has been carefully curated by Nick for this gig and is full of excitement, a few surprises, and always musical fun.
Kelly Moneymaker, originally from Alaska, has very recently arrived in New Zealand from the United States and has had a very successful career in music including having worked with Ringo Starr, Diana Ross, George Clinton, Jewel, Meatloaf, Enya, and Expose to name but a few. Nick Granville - Guitar and Bandleader
Nick has played with many big bands including regularly with the Rodger Fox Big Band (also known as the Wellington Jazz Orchestra), the Vaughn Roberts Big Band and with the late great Russell Garcia. He is a regular performer at the jazz club and always produces great music of the style appreciated by our members.
Nick has released five CD’s of original music, he teaches Jazz guitar at the NZ school of Music and is a prolific active guitarist on the New Zealand music scene.
Bryn Van Vliet - Saxophones & Flute - Bryn is a Wellington-based saxophonist whose credits include performing locally and internationally with the Rodger Fox Big Band, dub-rockers Tunes of I, as well leading his own groups and playing sideman to others.
He is a Saxophone, Flute & Clarinet teacher and performer based in Wellington, and graduated from Te Koki New Zealand School of Music in 2014 with a Bachelor of Music with Honours majoring in Jazz performance. He started playing at school and has performed and toured with Jazz groups, Classical ensembles including the NZSO, Big Bands, Reggae/Dub bands, The Rodger Fox Big Band and Musical theatre
Nick Tipping – Bass. Nick is regularly performing at the Jazz Club with many groups. Nick Tipping wears a number of hats. He’s best known to RNZ listeners as the host of the weekly jazz programme Inside Out, and from mornings on RNZ Concert, where he plays full length masterpieces from across the classical spectrum on The Works.
However Nick can also be found on stages around the country as a jazz & pop bass player, whose credits include Bic Runga, the NZSO, Nathan Haines, Suzanne Prentice, and international stars Chris de Burgh, Kurt Elling, and Kenny Burrell. Although in a past life Nick has also been an academic - he holds a PhD from the NZ School of Music and lectured there for a decade - his roots are in classical music, and he’s performed with orchestras and choirs.
Lance Philip – Drums. Lance Philip is the Programme Director of Jazz Performance at the NZSM. He is also head of percussion, specialising in the performance of Jazz drumming, and “Latin” hand percussion. He has been with NZSM's Jazz programme staff since 1993
Lance is known for his versatility, which spans classical performance (NZSO, Orchestra Wellington), musical theatre (Les Miserables, Mamma Mia!) and TV shows (five years on TVNZ's Dancing with the Stars), big bands (Rodger Fox, RNZAF Big Band, NZYJO), contemporary fusion (Paralax, C for Cats, Funkbone Experience), R&B (Soul Estate, Slide) and Latin ensembles (Kevin Clark, Carlos Navae).
