SUMMARY:City Jazz at The Grand - A tribute to Mike Bain
DESCRIPTION:Founded by long-time Wellington Jazz Club president\, Mike Bain\, City Jazz is a 7-piece band that has been playing New Orleans-inspired jazz for over 20 years. The band performs at jazz clubs and jazz festivals across the lower North Island. Its core repertoire includes dixieland classics\, plus swing numbers emphasising Duke Ellington and Count Basie. A few jump blues numbers (think Louis Jordan) round out what you may expect from this swinging band. \n\n\n\nThis gig is presented in honour of Mike Bain\, who passed away in May of this year. All current and past members of the Wellington Jazz Club\, and their guests\, are invited to share an evening to celebrate the music that Mike loved – in the surroundings of The Grand (upstairs). Entrance next to St James Theatre\, 69 Courtenay Place\, Wellington. \n\n\n\nTake the lift to the 1st floor (or use the stairs) after turning left inside The Grand. Seating is available at tables\, drinks and snacks can be purchased at the bar\, and meals can be ordered to have afterwards (see The Grand website for the menu). A bus stop is right outside\, with a WCC car parking building around the corner in Tory Street and street parking nearby. \n\n\n\nFree admission (no bookings required)

SUMMARY:Raven Mavens Quartette
DESCRIPTION:If you can imagine the sound of the blues\, spiced with flavours of the American songbook\, folk\, country\, and even the rock and roll of Jerry Lee Lewis\, with a helping of original songs that reflect these diverse influences\, played by four masterful woman musicians\, then you have the Raven Mavens Quartette. Their talents enable the whole to be greater than the sum of the parts\, driven by the unmistakable sound of boogie-woogie and New Orleans jazz piano. With superbly received recent performances at the Wellington Folk Festival\, and their second album release gigs\, the Raven Mavens Quartette brings their fun\, accomplished and engaging act to the Wellington Jazz Club.   \n\n\n\nThe group had its genesis more than a decade ago when piano player and singer songwriter Cindy Muggeridge encountered the singing and clarinet skills of Marian Carter (who can also be heard with the Valley Stompers and the Carter Parker Trio\, where she is lead vocalist). The next steps in the group’s formation were the inclusion of drummer and singer Anje Glindemann (Tin Pan Alley\, Monty Wolf\, Andrew London\, Karen Clarke\, The Salty Hearts) and of multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Kate Marshall\, (regularly heard with acoustic blues wizard Bob Cooper-Grundy). “Kate is an amazing player”\, Cindy says. “She can move as easily from piano to piano accordion\, to fiddle or flute\, depending on what the song calls for – or she feels like playing!”  \n\n\n\nThe “fun” of their music and the unmistakable synergy of these four female musicians is what they will be sharing with their audience\, and because it’s the Wellington Jazz Club\, expect the addition of some classic ballads into the set. \n\n\n\nMembers:                      $25 \n\n\n\nNon-members:           $35 \n\n\n\nStudents:                      $10
