WJC News-letter for March 2019

Vice President’s Report

Our Jazz calendar year got off to a tremendous start on Sunday 17th Feb at Meow. A comfortably full house of 116 guests was treated to an evening of extraordinarily professional and quite exquisite jazz. It was great to see many new faces as members apparently took advantage of their newly acquired complementary admission tickets to introduce potential new members to the club.
As detailed in our February newsletter Nick Granville had put together a special quartet to support and celebrate the recent arrival in Wellington of international star vocalist, Kelly Moneymaker.
It was a superb performance of mainly classic jazz standards to which the enthralled audience responded with sheer delight. At the official close of the evening I informed the crowd from the stage that my four year old granddaughter has expressed interest in becoming a jazz singer. As result of listening to Kelly and her group I planned to sit down with my granddaughter to listen to some of Kelly’s videos on the internet. As it turned out that event occurred the following morning and was a complete surprise. My granddaughter, who has a mind of her own, relished the music and insisted on two repeats. We were listening to a Kelly recording entitled “Hello Beauty Official Release” available on YouTube at
I strongly commend that link and Kelly’s many other internet offerings to readers wanting to interest recent generations in good music. I hasten to add you should follow up by purchasing Kelly’s recordings as well.
As expected Nick’s group put on a tremendous performance in their own right to once again provide members with a night that will live long in the memory. Bryn Van Vliet (saxophone and flute), Nick Tipping (bass), Lance Philip (drums), Nick Granville (guitar) demonstrated not only individual virtuosity but also that genius ability to listen to and respond to each other in combination to reach the heights of superb jazz.
I took advantage of the opportunity to announce that I have handed over the position as club Gigs planner/organizer. I have been on the job since mid-2006 and as they say 12 years is a life sentence. I will remain on the committee and retain the role of Vice President for a least another year.
Committee members Loretta Garrow and Nik Straugheir now form the team which will identify and hire jazz performers for the club. We have been working together now for some time and I am confident they will do a great job. The fact they organized the gig I have just been describing is a great omen.
Chris Caudwell, Vice President

Sunday March 17th. 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Meow.

is a trio of piano, acoustic bass and percussion.
The genre is boogie and blues, and Jan sings and plays piano, Mike Pullman plays drums, and Nigel Masters plays double bass.
Jan is a knockout boogie pianist with a rich resonant voice who has captured audiences around the world with her originality, her energy, and her sparkling charm and gentle wit.

From a background in classical music with a long-term interest in composition and song writing, Jan Preston has created her own style, not only through her piano playing but also her singing and song writing, which now sees her shine as a truly antipodean original.

Winner of five music awards, Jan has sold out concerts throughout Australia, NZ, Europe and the UK, composes music for film and TV, and performs side by side with the greatest contemporary boogie piano players in the world today.

Her early career began in NZ with the 1980 No 1 Hit Band “Coup D’Etat”, and around this time she was asked by (then filmmaker) Sam Neil to write music for a documentary. Jan has continued composing music for film and TV all her life, most recently for her sister Gaylene Preston’s film My Year With Helen, as well as performing original soundtracks for Silent Movies in Film Festivals and Series.
